PUBLIC AMENITIES
* ♦ REQUESTS BY WOMEN
At the monthly meeting of the Hutt Valley Women’s Citizen Guild, presided over by the president, Mrs. C. Moran, a discussion took place on the shortage of posting boxes in the city and the secretary, Mrs. R. Denny, was instructed to write to the Postmaster suggesting that an inspection be made, with a view to installing additional porting boxes where considered necessary and to replies: that a box be placed in the vicinity of Myrtle Street where citizens have to walk a considerable distance to post letters.
Untidy Bus Stop.—The untidy appearance oil the main bus stop, particularly in Daly a',rid Margaret Streets, was again discussed. Laudable attempts were being made in an endeavour to beautify the city and these efforts were being frustrated by a collection of discarded bus tickets. It was decided to draw the Council’s attention to the need for a rubbish receptacle.
Dangerous Crossing.—The Guild’s attention has been drawn to the dangerous pedestrian crossing' in Cuba Street and Montague Street, Lower Hutt. Several near accidents are being reported. This matter to be referred to the Traffic, Department. Closing of Bridge.—Concern was expressed at the decision of the City Council to permanently close the old bridge to pedestrians. This decision, it was considered, imposed hardship on a large number of housewives, who have no alternative shopping centre. The women concerned have, by hitter experience, realised what weights the bridge was called upon to boar and the solution evidently is the restoration of deliveries, including meat.
Haw Bottled Milk.—Pleasure was expressed that sufficient bottles were now available to supply those consumers who desired it with raw bottied milk.
