At the official opening of the new Hutt Intermediate School on Satu> day afternoon warm tributes were paid to the work done for education by Mr. W. V. Dyer, formerly chairman of the Wellington Education Board.
Mr. A. J. Gearing, formerly of the Hutt Bowling Club, has been elected president of the Paelcalcariki Bowling Club. # * *= Mr. W. F. Hadwin was re-elected president at the annual meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre. * »::< * The Rev. J.'A- Jermyn, of Petone, was one of the judges in the Plunket Medal oratory contest held at Wellington on Saturday night.
Ivlr.* George Warcup, junior, of Waterloo Road, was included in the party of Regular Force Cadets who proceeded to the Army School of Instruction, Trentham, last week.
Mr. D. W. Wood, of Lower Huu, wo.i the Cable Makers' Association’s gold medal, awarded to the candidate who gained the highest marks in the written part of the Electrical Wircmen”s ’ Registration Board’s examinations held in March. He secured 83 out of a possible 100 marks.
Mr. A: T. - Williams, of Macky Street, Taita, on Saturday won the Victoria University College Plunket Medal Contest, speaking on Nehru.
It is the first time in the history ol the contest that two brothers have won the Medal. Mr. J. C. P. Williams being the winner in 1944.
At a meeting of the council oi the Huttt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. N. T. Gillespie was congratulated on his appointment to the New Zealand Associated Chambers of Commerce.
Mr. V. Abraham, of Eastbourne, has been appointed sanitary inspector at Petone, succeeding Mr. J. G. Francis, who resigned recently.
Mr. P. Menara, of Taita, returned to New Zealand from a tour of Great Britain and the Continent by the liner Arawa last week.
Messrs. A. J. Callis, K. Jacobson, A. T. Rix, H. R. Webley, and D. W. Wood were Hutt Valley candidates who passed in the written part oi the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Board’s examinations held in March. Messrs. D. W. Benton, A. J. Callis, C. L. Chard, R. W. Hills, X. Jacobson, R. W. Mullis, R. Spearman and D. W. Wood passed in the practical part.
Mr. F. Dewhurst, of Petone, has been elected treasurer of the Wellington Bowling Centre.
Mr. J. F. Thompson, who has been transferred to Dunedin, and Mrs. Thompson were farewelled ai Petone last week and presented with two fireside chairs and an electric jug, as tokens of esteem. Tributes to their public service was paid by the Mayor of Petone, and other speakers.
