Closing of Street
— OBJECTION BY CHAMBER
At the suggestion of Messrs. C. Moran and A. Brockelsby the council o.f the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided at its last meeting to ask the City Council to re-open Brees Street, with, an ordinary level road crossing. Mr. Moran said the closing of Porutu and Brees Streets had caused great inconvenience to carriers, and meant that drivers wanting to get to the other side of the railway line liad to take a very roundabout route. It practically isolated Naenae. He thought they should have as many crossings as possible, which would give more service to the district. There was a big population on the other side of the railway line.
Mr. "Brockelsby: “It is absolutely scandalous that people should be isolated in that way. There should be ‘a permanent crossing in Brees Street, which is a natural locality for one, and a permanent ramp should be erected eventually.”
Mr. H. V. Horlor said that according to present plans of the Railway Department and the City Council there would not be a crossing in that area. There were crossings at Waterloo Road and Park Avenue, which were made safe by signals, and the rajnps there were built by tbe Railway Department at no cost to the City Council. Realising that Po.-utu and Brees streets must be closed some day the City Council had taken the view that it should he done now. A ramp at Brees or Porutu Street would cost £IO,OOO, which would have to be raised by the Council by loan, and there was no hope of such a loan being carried.
