Winter Flower Show

HUTT VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL VERY COLOURFUL DISPLAY As Mr. Walter Nash, Minister of Finance, said in officially opening the Ilutt Valley High School’s winter llower show, it is easy in summer weather to, produce colour and brightness, but it is a different matter to produce a summer glow out of winter conditions.

The pupils of the school are to be congratulated that at a time when flowers are scarce, as near the “shortest day” as possible, they made a very colourful display of floral designs of all kinds, showing much artistry in the toning and contrasting of colours of flowers, foliage and berries. There were stalls, -baskets, tray gardens, vases, bouquets, saucer posies, sprays, and other exhibits, and all were of a high quality.

At the opening ceremony the school assembly hall was crowded with lnappy-faced girls and boys. The official party on the stage included Mr. Nash, Mrs. E. P. Hay (Mayoress), Mr. J. N. Millard (principal) and Mrs. Millard, Mrs. G. C. Mayo (who judged the exhibits), Mr. J. Stonehouse, acting-chairman of the Board of Governors, and members of the teaching staff. Mr. Millard welcomed the visitors, and congratulated the'young exhibitors on their fine work.

Colour from Gloom

Mr. Nash said it always gave him great pleasure to take part in any functions connected with the school. He congratulated the pupils upon their show, and said that their success in making such a beautiful display in mid-winter provided an object-lesson for life —to produce colour and worth-while results when things were hard and difficult. He thought conditions in the world were worse than they had ever been, and everyone should try to make things brighter. He congratulated the pupils on the exhibits and the school on what it had done for the Hutt Valley.

After viewing the exhibits the official party was entertained at morning tea.

In the afternoon parents and others interested inspected the show, and later the flowers were sold, the proceeds going to the school funds.
