Shortage of Gas

PROTEST BY WOMEN

REPRESENTATIONS TO BOARD

At a ineeting of the Hutt Valley Women’s Citizen Guild dissatisfaction was once more expressed at the lack of gas, particularly on Saturday mornings, when it was said it is almost impossible to cook a meal.

Members stated that not even at 11.30 was the pressure increased, and food is being wasted through not being properly cooked. Members understood that the Gas Board is having a difficult time while awaiting new plant, but consumers expected that the rationing of gas would at least enable them to cook one hot meal a day. The secretary read a Quotation from a newspaper dated Saturday, June 12, that Hutt Valley users of gas will continue to receive reduced pressure (as they have for some months) between the hours of 1.30 and 4 p.m. on Sundays. It was considered that if this were only inconvenience gas users would not complain, as very lititle cooking would be done during those hours. A letter has been sent to the secretary of the Gas Board expressing this view.

DISCUSSION BY BOARD HUTT MEMBERS CRITICAL At the monthly meeting of the Petono and Lower Hutt Gas Board the Lower Hutt representatives were in a critical mood regarding the supply of gas to Lower Hutt comsumers.

Mr. H. G. Burrell raised the matter and stated that many consumers •frere unable to get a meal cooked and tliat it bad been particularly bad the two previous week-ends. Mr. H. Saunders said while he had thought rationing would improve the position it was not so, and he had received many complaints. Mr. J. C. Martin (a Petone member) said he could sympathise with the Lower Hutt members and consumers, as he had heard complaints from the Waterloo district.

The engineer was requested to make enquiries and bring down a report at next meeting.
