SPORTS ON THE SABBATH

(To the Editor.) Sir.—Mr. Giltrap, two weeks ago, took the liberty of quoting the Bib.'e in defence of Sunday sport. May 1 remind him that we as Christians are asked "to keep holy the Sabbath day." "Six days shalt thou labour and do all thou hast to do, but tho seventh is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." 12th chapter, tenth and eleventh verses. It is an insult t'j our Creator to ignore His commandments when all is well with us, then appeal to Him for protection when a calamity threatens. Councillor Giltrap' shows the weakness of his case by quoting Auckland and Dunedin. If a thousand people break the Sabbath that is no reason why we should. Apart from the religious viewpoint •there are many elderly people living near those sports grounds and also business people who long for a quiet day at the weekend. Is it "narrowminded" to want peace and rest on the Sabbath day? Sports bodies already have an extra half-day oh Saturday as welias every evening of every week-day, what more do they want? This is the time God's representatives! ought to speak loudly la their Master's defence.—l am, etc., JUSTICE.
