From 1906 until 1934, the year in which lie moved to the Hutt Valley, lie lived in I?imaru, where he was an active member pf the musical organisations established there.

During the 1914-18 war, he conducted the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Band, at Sling Camp, England, and also studied at the Royal Military School of Music at Knellor Hall. In 1935 Mr. Booth played a large part in the formation of the Air Force Band, and was its first conductor.
