Calls To Fires

DIALLING OF TELEPHONE

NUMBER DISPLAY URGED

The superintendent of the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade recently brought to the notice of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry an important matter affecting the calling of the local brigades during the time of lire disaster. He pointed out that by reason of the method of listing of the telephone numbers in the emergency section of the telephone directory the Wellington Fire Brigade’s number, which enjoys a considerablev measure of prominence, is, under the stress of the situation, invariably dialled by the subscriber affected. The effect of this is often a delay which is vital in the suppression of the fire. It is suggested that the number of the Lower Hutt Brigade, 62-200, or of the Petone Brigade, 63-900, should be prominently displayed in the vicinity of all telephones and possibly the entry in the telephone directory showing the emergency numbers appropriately amended.
