Milk in The Valley
NEW TREATMENT PLANT BOARD NOT TO JOIN COMPANY The proposed formation of a company to control the milk treatment plant that is to be erected at Taita v was discussed fully at the last meeting of the Hutt Valley and Bays Metropolitan Milk Board. The total capital of the proposed company is <£loo, ooo. Some time ago it was proposed that the company should consist of the Government and the Wellington Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd. Later it was suggested that Ahe Milk Board should replace the Government in the company, and .that the partners should provide £IO,OOO each, the remaining £BO,OOO to be provided by debentures. The chairman of the Board, Mr. Jtb. W. Wise, said that representatives the Dairy Farmers’ Association had given him the impression that they would be pleased to have the Board combining with them. ' The Board’s solicitor, Mr. N. T. L Gillespie, outlined the Articles of K association of the proposed comHk any.
Objections Raised J. B. Yaldwyn said he could HHHI any advantage in substituting for the Government. The Bon’d, whose du'ty it was to see that the consumers received the best possible milk, could control things better ln-f it was outside the company. It should be the controlling authority and have no financial interest. Mr. E. F. Rothwell agreed with Mr. Yaldwyn, stating that the Board should steer clear of socialisation of what had been a private industry and take the function of supervising and controlling the milk industry. Mr. W. eiltrap said that if the "Board became part of the company its hands were more or less tied. Mr. P. Dowse took a different view. He thought the Board should •do the job itself rather than become a watchman to watch others. On the motion of Mr. Giltrap, seconded by Mr. Rothwell, it was decided that no financial interest in the proposed company be taken by the Board. Mr. Doyrse was the . o t nly dissentient. Consideration of Plans Messrs. T. P. Twomey (Agricultural Department), J. P. HallKenney, A. L. Ggilvie, and Y. S. Lynskey (Milk Marketing Division) were present at the-meeting. ~;;Mr. Hall-Kenney presented plans m the proposed new milk treatment plant at Taita, which it is hoped will be ready lor operation in two or three years. The fillers provide *tor 10,000 gallons of raw or pasteurised milk. The building will be
of reinforced concrete, and all the 4 machinery will be of the latest type. '.The. plant is British in origin and will require no dollar excess, and one-third of it is being manufactured ; • in .New Zealand. Dr. Hubert Smith, the district '' medical officer of health, said the plans were the most satisfactory he had seen, and if everything worked out as planned everyone would be f‘ well satisfied. * The plans as presented were approved. The Board decided to licence the - Mangaroa plant for the bulking and of milk, Mr. Twomey and Dr. Smith stating that conditions there were satisfactory for another few years’ working.
