Need of Production

PROBLEM AND CHALLENGE MORE PEOPLE, LESS FOOD . In his address to the Lower Hutt Chamber o£ Commerce the Itignt Hon. Walter Nash stated that the task of the world is to use its resources for the improvement of the whole of its population. "There are 2,200,000,000 people in the world, that is 10 per cent, more than in 1938," said Mr. Nash, "and yet statistical reports show that the volume of production throughout the world is 10 per cent, less than in 1908, so that

we are faced with 10 per cent, less food and other goods to provide for 10 per cent, more people.

"The primary task of each country," Mr. Nash continued, "is to organise its own production, distribution, and trading system so as to maintain good living standards for its own people, whilst contributing towards the living standards in other countries. That is the problem and challenge to the intelligent people of.all countries.

"The Charter drafted at Geneva and Havana, which will shortly be discussed in Parliament, .has as its main objective the solution of that problem and the acceptance of that challenge."
