Hutt River Environs
SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENT
BIT' OF ENGLISH BEAUTY
"It will be a glorious opportunity to bring a bit of English beauty to the district," said Mr. H. S. Dudding, chairman of the Hutt River Board, in suggesting that English trees be planted on certain parts of the river bank.
"Tho trees should be of a decidu-
ous nature, otherwise the weight of I the water-logged top branches in : the winter time might cause uproot-
ing through erosion of the soil below. ; With grassy banks, lovely English I trees, and the provision of swimming [ pools at intervals the river bank J: would become a popular picnic rel sort. There is no reason why the I trees should not be planted immedi- ,'; ately, for they take some time to I gr<sJv."
Mr. A. Maud agreed, stating that it would be no use making plantations of native trees. Something in: the nature of an English park should be aimed at. The engineer, Mr. H. Sladden, said that while the Board's main duty was to align arid protect the river
there was no reason why it should
not co-cperate as much as practicable with the City Council in beau-
,: tifying the environs of the river. j The Superintendent of Reserves, Mr. J A. White, was keen to do whatever * was possible in that direction. * ! '
