PKOM’ECT OF DEVELOPMENT NEED of PLAYING FIELDS Tin* Halt River Board. at. its last meeting, dealt with a letter received from the Wellington Cricket Association asking il the Board intended to develop playing fields on Bear Island The chairman. Ml'. F. 8. Hewer, said it was not the Board's policy to develop sports grounds. Fart of Gear Island was leased to the ShunUon Golf Clui) until 1952. The City Council had leased about 21 acres ol the island, and would develop the area as soon as it was possible to do so. tmt in view of urgent works requiring attention and the shortage of labour lie did not think that this would be probable for some years. More provision was being made for cricketers by the City Council, and next season they should he playing on Te Whiti Park. Other areas were being developed as quickly as possible. Mr. A. Maud pointed out that more sports grounds were becoming available each year but they were for 11ntt Valley Hubs. The meeting considered that in view of the growing needs of llu l l Valley sports bodies the Wellington Cricket Association’s request was not likely to he favoured.
