WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

UITT VALLEY' FEDERATION "Many interesting subjects comprised the programmes of the AprilMay meetings of the Institutes in the Mutt Valley. A talk by Miss Kane on the work of the Licensing Committee was given a! the Valley Institute. The competition was hand-made handkerchiefs for the patients at Silver» sir«: in Hospital. A useful and practical demonstration given at SUverstreain by Mrs. Dwyer showed how to make a Boor ma! and a mop out of scraps of woollen material. One of the competitions was for beaded buttons. Upper liutt were entertained by Mrs. Horn. Dominion Secretary, with her adventures while organising Institutes amonu; the Maoris in North Auckland. Siiml! Institute "Adopted" Upper Hutt also decided to '•adopt'' | a small isolated Women's Institute In the far north, in response to an appeal for help and members were asked to contribute soap to be sent to an Institute in England. Twenty-live members from all part;- of the Federation returned recently from a ten-day holiday trip to the South Island. They set out from Caristehurch. visiting Hamner. Greymouth, Hokltika, Westport. Denniston- where they were entertained by the president of the local Women's Institute -and Nelson. The trip was a very happy one.

Rpuni Branch The F.puni branch of the Women's Institute held its monthly meeting in the Rosstter Avenue Church Hail. There was a good attendance. Miss Stephanie Hart entertained with two piano solos which were much appreciated. Mrs. Carter won tlrst prize for something made out of a sugar bag. The competition next month will he something made out of two skeins of wool.

Mrs. Collard gave a very interesting report on the trip which Institute members have just completed down Cue West Coast of the South Island.

Meetings will be held on the sec ond Wednesday instead of the thin Thursday in future.
