THE HUTT VALLEY AND EAST HARBOUR ROSE SOCIETY leople" - the motto ol the riutt Valley and East Harbour Rose Society. So many Rose growers do not obtain the results they expect but with just a little more care in the preparation of Rose beds before planting, a .greater measure of success would be assured. ~ .SHELTER: —Use. wherever possible, the shelter but not the shade of trees. Hedges, shrubs and board fences are also good. Low trellis has an advantage over high trellis. Manuka makes good shelter. PREPARATION OP THE SOlL:—Trench the ground NOW (April) not less than two feet, incorporating vegetable matter in the sub-soil, with basic slag, bone dust or blood and bone. Leave a slight slope at. the base of the pit to a drainage outlet. Roses dislike wet feet. Mix well-rotted animal manure or compost in the top twelve inches. PLANTING OR REPLANTING.— (May and June). Place the plants in a bucket of water whilst awaiting planting in the beds already prepared. Dig a hole twelve inches square, six to nine inches deep. Plant the Rose with the union of the bud and stock just below the surface. To ensure that the Rose is planted neither too deep nor too shallow, use a lath and place it across the to]) of the hole. Make a mound of soil to hold the Rose in position and use some line sifted virgin soil for placing amongst the roots. Work this soil about the roots with the fingers and afterwards tread it firmly and water. Use no manure at this stage but during winter keep the top soil well stirred. (Pruning takes place late July or early August.) Further information upon the Cultivation of the "Queen of Flowers" may b«, obtained from— THE HUTT VALLEY & EAST HARBOUR ROSE SOCIETY, Hon.
