Mr. and Mrs. H. Green, Mayor and Mayoress of Petone, were among the official guests at the opening of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's autumn show on Wednesday.
Mr. K. K. Watts, president of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has returned from a visit to Dunedin.
Mr. V. S. Draper has been granted leave of absence from the May and June meetings of the Hutt River Board. It is Mr. Draper's intention to visit the tailed Stales.
Mr. S. G. Hogg, of Pahiatua, was a visitor to the Hutt Rotary Club on Wednesday.
Mr. C. Halford. secretary of the Hutf. Itlver Board, has been authorised by the Board to attend the local Government officers' refresher course to be held at Palmerston North later in the year. •* . • Mr. R. H. Webster notified the council of the Hun Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at its last meeting, that owing to pressure of business he found it necessary to resign from the council. He look this step with great regret, he said, for he had greatly enjoyed his association with members of the council. The chairman, Mr. K. K. Watts, voiced the general regret at Mr. Webster's decision, and thanked him for his valuable services to the Chamber.
Before proceeding to open the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's show last week, the president, Mr. J. E. P. Vogel. referred to the loss the Society had sustained in the death of Mr. H. Poole. As a mark of respect a short silence was observed.
Mr. N. T. Gillespie was congratulated on his appointment as Nota.y Public at the last meeting of the council of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry. • * • Mr. C. N. Watson-. Munro, who, according to a London cablegram, is 'o represent New Zealand on tin Antarctic research committee, which is comprised oi members of the Royal Geographical Society and the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge, received part of his education at the Eastern Hutt School and the Hutt Valley High School. In 1035 be joined the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as a physicist, and since then has done brilliant scientific work in New Zealand, Britain, and the United States, specialising in radar and atomic energy. He was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1 •»4fi. Mr. Watson-Munro is a brother of Miss E. WatsonMunro, of Montague Street, Lower Hutt.
