Autumn Flower Show
Rich autumn tints made the Hint Valley Horticultural Society's show last week a colourful exhibition. De the somewhat unsatisfactory gardening season the entries were numerous :n.<i the quality excellent, and the beautiful display made a deep impression on those who attended the show. It was especially gratifying to sed .uch » splendid selection of chrysanthemums, entries in which had fallen iwny somewhat in recent years. I'here were many very line blooms in the- section. The champion of mampions award was given to a lovely buttercup-yellow ■'Mrs. R. C. Pulitng" exhibited by V. Wakeham. whil the champion bloom in the i ->{>t*ii d;iss was a greenish-white ! 'Harold Wells" entered by Charles J Whitakt r. Blaze "i Colour Dahlias, too. were very beautiful, and ros.es. carnations, hydrangeas, ruchsias. and other 'lowers made the hall a blaze of colour. The decoraive sections Included sprays, saucerdesigns, table designs, wreath's, etc. —alt very harmonious and effective. An Anzac design carried out by a i 15-year-old girl, Tui Stalker, was particularly striking. Vegetables were in rood supply, and bottled fruits and preserves also aroused much interest. Then- were some spectacular stands. among them being those provided by the Garden Circle, the Reserves Departuieut of the City Council, the Hunuc Compost Society, and a novelty collection of unusual (lowers. berries and shrubs. The MultiOrganic Digester showed what could bo done with compost. Altogether the show was one of which the society could be proud and ;m illustration of the good work that it Is doing in the Hutt Valley. Official Opening Ceremony In introducing the Mayor. Mr. .1. \V. \ndrews. who opened the show, the president, Mr. J. E, P. .Vogel, said i hat as Mr. Andrews would soon be relinquishing the office of Mayor this would be his last appearance in that capacity, and the besl wishes of the society went with liini in the important office which h<- had undertaken. He thanked Mr. and Mrs. Andrews for the interest they had shown and the help they had given to the society and to the district. In officially opening the show Mr. Andrews said that during his 11 years of office as Mayor it had always given him pleasure to do what he could in the interest of the district and the Horticultural Society. He regretted severing his connection with the many local bodies and he trusted that the society would continue to do what it could to carry ou the work or making Lower Hutt the garden city. He joined with other members of the society in mourning the death of " Mr. Poole, with whom he had been i closelv associated for many years. i The district was the poorer for his dealn.
