DEATH OF PIONEER
MIL III'NKV J. POOLE The death occurred at his home in Waterloo Road, Lower Hutt, on .Monday morning of Mr. Henry James Poole, in his 91st year. Mr. Pooh' was a pioneer of New Zealand and one of the best-known horticulturists in the Dominion.
Born at Ringwood. Dorset. Eng-i land. Mr. Poole came io New Zealand about 7o years ago, and joined the Armed Constabulary, with whic.i h» had some thrilling experiences. In he resigned from the Constabulary, and a few years later entered into business as a horticulturist, establishing a nursery in Waterloo Road. Lower Hutt. His specialty was the raising of daffodils, and he was responsible for the introduction of many new varieties. He was a member ot the Royal Horticultural Society of England, which awarded id til the rare honour of the Peter liarr award, and his many years of service with the National Daffodil Association of New Zealan I brought him the honour of life inembership. lie was one of the earliest members of the Hull Valley' Horticultural Society, of which for many year.: he was treasurer. and an esteemed member of the Royal New Zealand institute of Horticulture. He was also a member of the Historical and Early Settlers' Associa-
tion. Mr Poole is survived by three sons. Mr. \V. II Poole, of Khandallaii, Mr. 11. D. Poole and Mr. H. I. Poole, of Lower Hutt, and ti\o dr.tlgnters. Misses E,, K.. M. R., an I N. Poole, of Lower Hutt, and Mrs. K. C. Crown, of Wellington. Mrs. Poole died several years ago. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended.
