Hutt Rose Show

*** i ■ OPENED BY MR. CUTLER, V.O. BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS SHOWN The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's rose show was held on Wednesday, and despite the very unfavourable season that had been experienced the entries, though less numerous than usual, were of a high standard, many lovely examples of what is truly the "Queen of Flowers" being exhibited. The champion bloom in the rose section was awarded to a beautiful McGredy's Yellow exhibited by Mrs. G. C. Mayo. The other sections of the show were also full of interest, the display arranged by the Federation of Women's Instituted being very striking. The baskets and boxes of dowers, dish gardens with designs as novel as they were intricate, posies, shoulder and miniature sprays, etc., were much admired. The Women's Institute also had a comprehensive and very fine exhibition of arts and crafts, which greatly impressed the promenaders. Chilton St. James School exhibited for the first time. The children's section included. som<. ; plendid work.

A stand of pot plants and a" few vegetables were also on exhibition. The multi-organic digester, which provides compost from, garden to warden in twelve weeks and proves that even gorse and convolvulus may je turned into valuable compost, created much interest. Opening of Show After Mrs. Vogel, wife of the president, Mr. J. E. F. Vogel, had presented a bouquet to Mrs. Cutler, wife of Mr. A. It. Cutler, High Comoiistnoner for Australia, who opened :he show, Mr. Vogel referred to tin iease of the Horticultural Hall to ..he City Council, stating that the society was eager to help the cultural bodies of the city. Dates had beer .•eserved for the society's shows, so they would not. be interfered with. He congratulated the Women's Institutes upon their magnificent display.

The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, cordially welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Cutler to the district. Mr. Cutler' congratulated the society upon its excellent show. In Australia, he said, they were not so jonscious of gardens as in New Zealand; the hotter weather, perhaps, sent the people to the beaches and outdoors away from home. In New Zealand he had been impressed by the extent of gardens and the interest taken in them. The finest gardens of all were in Lower Hutt. 1. was amazing to see how prolifically flowers grew in the Valley and how successfully exhibitors had fought the bad weather this season. lit ..bought that countries showed theii diaracteristics by their love o. dowers.
