CLOSING OF MAILS

FACILITIES AT POST OFFICE When the time for the closing of mails at the Lower Hutt Post Office was under discussion at the last meeting of the executive of the Hint Valley Chamber of Commerce the postmaster, Mr. Bennett, stated that members were under a. misapprehension regarding the closing of mails for the South Island. These closed at 3.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, not 11:30 a.m., as stated at a recent meeting. In Wellington they closed at 4 p.m., so Lower Hutt was well served. They were tied up with the rail service, and the rail service today was very poor. For Auckland the mail closed at noon to catch the 3 p.m. train, and on the days when the. Limited ran they closed at 3.30. Mr. Bennett assured the Chamber that lie was always eager to cooperate in every way possible, and he was thanked for his action in improving facilities. First-class Service Mr. N. T. Gillespie paid tribute to the first-class service given by the staff in regard to the 394 dialled number; it was almost simultaneous, he said. 1 In reply to questions Mr. Bennett stated that the staff position was improving, but it was impossible to get telegraph boys and they were using three cars for deliveries. He also pointed out that the wage tax could be paid by cheque, which relieved congestion in the Post Office. Quite a number of business people were taking advantage .of this.
