Indus rial relations are receiving wide attention these days from employers and employees, and while sections of both seem to think that it should be all "take” and no “give” there is a growing reeogni-, a ion that each is in erdependent on i|e other, and that to benefit themlives and the community generally verything possible should be done to bring about happy relations between emplovers and workers and maintain peace in industry. Ihe greatest need today, as has been pointed out many times, is to increase production, and that can omy be done bv keeping the wheels ot indurtrv moving as smoothly as
possible. That applies not only to factories but to every branch of employment. for while an employer is selfing the goods produced the worker is selling his service, and both should give good value for money received. Only in that way can "complete economic recovery come.
At the last meeting of the council of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, during a discussion on industrial relations, Mr. F-. A. '1 ouikies put the matter in a nutshell when lie said that it all boiled down to service, applying to worker and employer alike. 1 hey should all give service to the community, with a just return, ol course, and an employer could not do his best for the community unless the workers gave their best to their employers. Another member, Mr. S. Hough, also expressed a truism when he stated that good industrial relationship paid, and a healthy atmosphere and goodwill in a factory or other business meant much, not only to that particular business but to the community generally. With an increased recognition of each other’s problems and a determination to do their best for all, employers and workers will draw closer together, and the country as a whole will benefit. The tendency in some quarters to draw class distinctions and create unrest between employers and employees is to be regretted. Only by all working for the common good will the muchdesired “back to normal” he attained.
