HUTT BOWLING CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON SUCCESSFUL YEAR EXPECTED There was a large attendance-of bowlers and their friends at the Hutt Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club on Saturday afternoon, when the club’s offical opening for the 194 6-47 season was performed by the president, Mr. G. H. Cate. Also present were Mr. W. F. Hadwin, president of the Wellington Centre; Mr. M. J. Casey, centre representative on Ae New Zealand Bowling Council: and Mr. C. R. Ingram’, Dominion and Centre secretary. Mr. Cate paid tribute 'to those many members who worked so hard in the club’s interests during the time they were without a greenkeeper. As a result the greens and the whole property had been luaintained in magnificent order. He congratulated Mr. A. J. Webster on achieving the great distinction of being the winner of three club events last year. Mr. Cate announced that it -had been decided to allow members to play off their competition events from 10 a.m. on Saturdays if they so wished. The first jack was thrown up by Mrs. N. Buckeridge, the daughter of the president, and the club patron, Mr. R. Y. Shearer, play eel .the first bowl. As the ground was soft no play wa3 indulged in and the visitors and members' were entertained by the club at afternoon tea. The Civic Band provided selections during the afternoon. t President’s Congratulations Speaking as the president of the Wellington Centre, Mr. W. F. Hadwin congratulated the club on the wonderful greens. Mr. Horton, centre representative fur all greens in the centre, had stated that the Hutt greens were second to none in New' Zealand. He paid tribute to Mr. P. G. Taylor, green superintendent, foE--the untiring efforts to maintaifi" the greens during the term when the club was without a greenkeeper. - From Christmas to the end of February the greens would be in continuous use on account of the Dominion tournament and the centre fixtures. Every care should be given by players to.retire to the bank * after playing their bowls. The growth of the centre had increased enormously during the last four years, from 2059 in 19.42 to 2700 at present. Six new clubs have been formed in the centre—viz.. Naenae, Kilbirnie, Miramar, Tawa Flat, Waikanae, Raumati South. It is expected that the total membership of the Hutt Valley and outlying clubs will reach 1250 during the present season.
