Crowd Visits Scene of Fire During the week-end crowds of people visited tiie scene of the fire at St. James' Church. City Valuer's Car. The City Valuer is to be paid a car allowance of (id. per mile when using his car on city valuation work. Heavy Motor Traffic With petrol restrictions relaxed and the weather beautifully fine there was a constant stream of motor cars on the Hutt Valley roads on Sunday. Grant to Library Fund The Hutt Valley Headmaste.-s' Association thanked the Lower Hull City Council, at its last meeting, for a grant of £lO towards the Association's library fund. Limited Dock Accommodation So small is the dock at the Lower Hutt Police Station that it could not accommodate the three youths who were charged with robbery last week and they had to take their stand in the body of the Court. City Council Accounts Accounts paid amounting to £8 945/15/6 were approved and unpaid accounts amounting to £8543/ 2/10 were passed for payment at the last meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council. Lower Hutt Library; The number of books issued by the Lower Hutt Library during May was 12,120, compared with 13,169 during the same month last year. The number of subscribers in May was 3211, as against 3084 in May,' 1945. Thanks for Fat The Lower Hutt sub-centre of the Red Cross Society acknowledges with thanks the supplies of fat received during the week-end, for aid to Britain, and states that the appeal will" continue until next Monday. ' Talk to Itotary Club A very interesting talk on lis experiences when he cruised urouad the New Zealand coast, and explored the West Coast Sounds as captain of the yacht Ibex was given by Mr. N. Thomas at the last meeting of the Hutt Rotary Club. Lost R..S.A. Badges. The annual report of the Hutt Valley Returned Services Association stated that the supply of badges has improved materially. The delay of the past, few months has been caused by the shortage of labour and materials. It is noticed that badge losses are heavy and replacements are hard to get in 'the meantime. £SOO to Hutt The winner of the second prize "of £SOO in the "Easy to Tako" art union, drawn last week, >vis Mrs. Beaumont, of Oxford Terrace. Lower Hutt. Among the winners <-£ £5 were "My Lucky Day," Lower Hutt; "Our Day,''' Naenae; "We Three," Petone; and G. Langslone, Jackson Street, Petone. Financial Help to Band It was mentioned at the annual meeting of the Lower Hutt Civic Band last week that when the Band needed assistance to take it to the New Zealand Brass Band Contest at Christchurch a few months ago £350 was raised in a few days. This practical help was very much appreciated.
Temporary Permits In view of the large number of applications for temporary permits for commercial use, the works committee of the Lower Hutt City Council recently decided to advise the Hon. R. Semple. of the position, stating that a further twelve; applications had been approved at the last meeting of the committee.
"What a Hopeless Muddle." "What a hopeless muddle the High Street footpath traffic is in o.i Friday afternoons," said a recent arrival in Lower Hutt.. "Whit with groups of people chatting in the middle of the footpath, prams pushed at all angles while the mothers stop to chat, and bicycles lyi-ig naifway across the footpath, it is certainly difficult for pedestrians to get .along."
Increase in Speeding At Monday night's meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council the engineer, Mr. H. R. Bach, reported that speeding by heavy traffic has been on the increase lately, 15 cases having been checked and reported for further proceedings, speeds having ranged from 35 to 40 miles per hour. A decided increase of traffic has been noticeable over the past two months, and it is certain that a heavier increase will take place from now on, particularly in view of the petrol situation. Container Dispute A conference between New Zealand delegates of the retailers and growers regarding container charges, held at Wellington last week, proved abortive. After a long discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr. L. V. Phillips, of Lower Hutt, secretary of the Dominion Council of Commercial Growers that the conference resume on June 19. A committee of representatives of both sides will continue to attempt to reach a settlement and report back to the meeting when it is recoa'vened.

A hot wind that blew in Lower Hutt on Monday evening was almost uncanny when contrasted with the bitterly cold conditions which had. prevailed all day. Not Sent to School For failing to send his two children to school on the required number of days, Thomas Leslie Raines was fined £2 in the Magistrate's: Court at Lower Hutt. School Football (.round It was reported at a recent meeting of the Wellington Rugby Lnion that the football ground at the Waterloo School would be availauie for lower grade matches.. Rehabilitation Loans Loan- authorisations made by the Rehabilitation Board reached £19,804,240 at the end of April. A newrecord of £1,510,074 for,April was £62,317 above the record set in March. Dirty and Untidy Premises The engineer reported to the Lower Hutt City Council on Monday night that one verbal notice,/ which had been complied with was given' to clean up dirty and untidy premises during the month. Tuberculosis Association's Symbol The National Tuberculosis Association *of the United Kingdom has given approval to the Wellington Tuberculosis Association's use of the distinctive Cross of Lorraine as its emblem. This Cross is usually reproduced in red. Sales Tax on Sports Goods At a meeting of the Wellington Council of ■' Sport it was decided to ask the New Zealand Couacil of Sport to approach the Government with a request to have the 4'o per cent, sales tax on golf and tennis balls and badminton shuttles reduced to the 20 per oent. imp ; ; ed on other sports goods. Meeting of Ratepayers A meeting of 'members of the Lower Hutt Ratepayers' Association will be held on Monday, J'une 17. The formation of branches of the Association in various branches of the city will be considered, and members are asked to attend the meeting and air their views on rating • valuations, bus stops, civic centre, etc. Former A.T.C. Building The Lower Hutt City Council has granted a firm permission to' use the former Air Training Corps building in High Street as temporary business premises (a sports depot). The application was granted for a period of two years. The A.T.C. has been granted the use of the long rcom in the grandstand at the Recreation Grounds at a rental of £1 per week. Transit Housing- in Masterton Masterton is falling into line,with other towns by providing transit housing in an endeavour to relieve the housing shortage. About a dozen units, each consisting of two small Army huts joined together, have so far been provided. There is a central community kitchen and washhouse and strict regulations are to be enforced to prevent the area from becoming a slum. Band's Trip Worth While "Musically the judge at the New Zealand Band Contest did not agree with the Band's interpretation of the Contest pieces," says the annual report of the Lower Hutt Civic Band. "In your committee's opinion, however, the trip was well worth while in the added experience obtained by all, especially the younger bandsmen, and the musical education- re- - ceived from our conductor, Mr. E, K. Thurkettle." Bank's Temporary Premises The Bank of Australasia,'Wellington, has been granted permission by the Lower Hutt City Council to erect temporary bank premises on its property at the corner of Margaret Street and High Street, subject to a satisfactory agreement being reached with the Bank regarding the ultimate building to be erected on thesite. The Bank's inspector wrote that when the permanent buildingwas erected a continuous veranciah and under-verandah lighting would be provided,' as requested by the Council. Mentioned in Despatches Plaques Bronze; plaques have recently been received by members of the New Zealand Forces who were mentioned. in despatches. Following the notification from the King that tlo honour had been conferred the following message from Lieutenant General Sir Bernard Freyberg was received by recipients: "It was with great pleasure that I read in Army Orders that you had been mentioned in despatches for distinguished service in the field, and I wish to send you my personal congratulations.''
