ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOWER HUTT SUCCESSES Members oi* the Lower Hutt Club had a very successful day at the Provincial Championships, no fewer than eleven titles coming to the club. The most successful competitor was Gray Hunter, who won three events, the high jump, javelin and 120yds. hurdles. Gray has not had many opportunities tor competition this season, but lie" still seems to keep in good form. Last Wednesday was his first appearance on the local ground this season.
Norm Rodley retained the broad jump title, which he won last season.
Don Treseder filled second place to George Waller in the 880yds championship, but failed to qualify in his heat of the 440yds. His form In the latter event was too bad to be true. It is difficult to account for these strange lapses in his form. One day he will turn on a brilliant run and the next a mediocre one. As anticipated, the club one four championships in the junior section. Tom Morrisey won the 440yds. and Dave Pope the discus. Noel Howitt won the shot and filled third place in the discus. Brian O'Neill retainhis javelin title and came second in the hop, step and jump, and third in the high jump. Minor places were obtained by Don Cameron, third in the two miles; Lionel Smith, second to Duckworth in the 120yds. and 220yds. hurdles; and lan Cleland, second in the broad jump. Women's Events In the women's events the club also had a successful day. Lorna ■Rosoman, although she has had very little competitive running this season, had no difficulty in winning the 75yds. and 100yds. championship. Lola McDougal won the 80 metres hurdles and Joan McGill filled second place in the 220yds. ? in which she was unfortunate enough to draw the outside lane, and third place in the 75yds. Joan was showing brilliant form early in the season and it was anticipated that she would do much better. She appears to have been ready too early. However, she should not be disappointed, she can and will do better. In the relay races the club filled second place in the senior, third in the junior , and second in the women's.
The latter race would have been won had the order of running the team
been changed. It. always pays to run the fastest runner first in a sprint relay. Results at Meeting The results at a recent club meeting were:—looyds. junior: Lionel Smith (4yds.) 1; I.
