SUPPLY OF GAS
(To the Editor) Sir,—l was interested to see in your last issue that Mr. Muir, chairman of the Gas Board, reports improved coal supplies and excellent pressure of gas. After two years' silent endurance I am at this point moved to protest. We have for long enough had poor pressure, no pressure, or good pressure at the wrong time, and complaints have at least been listened to, with varying explanations of no coal, poor coal, no labour, unsatisfactory labour, or out-moded plant—all' these reasons probably bearing some degree of relation to the truth. We have cooked on fires outside, on the envied electric stoves of good neighbours, on open fires, and .the reckless even * on electric heaters. We, have had ' spoilt dinners, under-done dinners, and dinners in the middle of the evening. To return to the excellent pressure .we are: enjoying at the moment! There has not been one day in the last week when our gas has not been completely out for longer (one hour) or shorter (15 minutes) periods between 4.30 p.m and 6 p.m., and at no time during those " , hours has the supply been.adequate. I must conclude, therefore, either that Mr. Muir has been misinformed and is fortunate enough not to - ■use the product of his Board, or that the public is receiving its first lesson in paying real money for Imaginary goods. Perhaps in time we will be able to satisfy our real hunger with imaginary meals. 'ln the meantime couldn't we have sotoe real gas? ■—l am etc., V '".■■,-'Ail -l. ' K. F. McLECD.
