A STAND-BY PLANT

NOT FAVOURED FOB HtJTT VALLEY K| As a possible means of overcomKg difficulties due to the periodic Shortage, the Hutt Valley Power has recently been in touch F with the Minister of Public Works L regarding the possibility of the KBOafd establishing its own stand-by plant. At lost week's meeting the Minister wrote stating that no useful pur- * pose would be served by the establishment of such a plant and pointing out that the Board had contracted to purchase all its power supplies from the Government. The Engineer-Manager, Mr. I. R. Robinson, in a special report to the Board, said that he agreed with the Minister as he did not think the establishment of a local stand-by plant would be an economic proposition. Such plant would cost in the vicinity of £150,000 to install and upkeep would approximate £2000 per annum. Even if it was successfully - established the Government would W no doubt soon take control of it. 11l view of all the circumstances he rwould not advise the Board to prowitli the project. J. Maher agreed with the Engineer, saying, "If the Hutt Valley dairy; farmers can't get an import licence for £12,000 worth of equipment, I don't see what chance the Power Board has of getting a licence to import £150,000 worth."
