The Fire Station

TOWN PLANNER'S REPORT CONFERENCE SUGGESTED The question of the proposed Waterloo Road Fire Station was again before the Lower Hutt Fire Board at ite meeting on Thursday last when the Board had before it the reply from the Minister of Internal Affairs, (Mr. W. Parry) to the board's &??? a ?" proval or -the site. Tue Minister s reply was a very lengthy one and was accompanied by an even lengthier: report from the Director of Town Planning, Mr. Mawson, The Chairman of the Fire Board Mr, F. S, Hewer, explained that the two documents had been received only just prior to the meeting and it had been impossible to circulate copies among members. Because of this no decision could be reached that day. The general purport of the Minister's letter was that, for reasons given in Mr. Mawson's report, the Fire Board should give further consideration to the question of site and should also confer with all the local bodies in the Hutt Valley area, including Petone. Mr. MaWSOn'B report, which was accompanied by a number of maps, could be said to leave Waterloo Rd. site '.'leading on points" as far as physical suitability was concerned, but Mr. Mawson explained that such advantages were based on certain assumptions he had made in regard to street extensions, boundaries,, etc, which assumptions would have to be confirmed by local authorities, other than the Fire Board. For instance, if the Penrose Street extension was not carried through, the suitability of Waterloo Road Site would be considerably affected. Again Mr. Mawson said, he was assuming the possibility of one Fire Board covering the Valley from the Petone beach to the head of the Valley.

It was also pointed out that it was difficult to decide on the suitability of Waterloo Road until the Board had decided for or aga|nst the Platoon System and could give some idea of the type and number of buildings it was proposed to erect.
