AFTER 42 YEARS

MR. W. H. OHLSON RETIRES

The high degree of esteem and affection in which the retiring headmaster of Waterloo School, Mr. W. H. Ohlson, is held, was clearly demonstrated last Thursday when, following a series of valedictory functions arranged in turn by the pupils, Staff and school committee, a very large gathering of parents and old pupils assembled at Birch Street Hall to -bid farewell to Mr. Ohlson on his retirement after 42 years' continuous teaching service. The chairman of the School Committee, Mr. R. D. Smith, presided, and speakers included the Hon. Walter Nash, Mr. E. P. Hay representing the Mayor and Councillors of Lower Hutt, Mr. A. F. McMurtrie, assistantant Director of Education, Mr. W. Y. Dyer, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, Mr. Jas Stonehouse, and Mr. M. Pitkowski of the teaching staff. All the speakers made eulogistic reference to Mr. Ohlson's sterling personal qualities and his untiring ;work in improving the school's amenities with particular reference to the arts and crafts section, and the school assembly hall. Presentations to Mr. Ohlson included a golf bag and set of clubs, a framed photograph of the school committee and a substantial cheque. Mrs. Ohlson also received an appropriate gift. During the evening items were rendered by Mesdames Millward and Anderson and Mr. 0. Bonifant.
