Arbor Day

Despite the inclement weather Arbor Day was not neglected in Lower Hutt on Wednesday last, and many hundreds of trees, mostly native, were planted in the streets by the children of the various schools. In Andrews Avenue the boys and girls ol' the Hutt Vailey High School were addressed by the mayor who spoke of the value of trees to the community and exalted the young people to take pride and- care of their own property. The mayor said that during the past .10 years 25-8 street trees had been planted by school children, and during the same period 227,284 trees had been planted within the city bounds. In Andrews Avenue Irish Yewi were planted down the centre, the first being planted by the mayoress, followed by the chairman of inb>rvs, Mr. F. S. Hewer; Mr. Win Smith for the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society; Mr. J. N. Millard, principal of the Hutt Valley High School. The High Schol Band was in attendance. At the other centres addresses were given by Mr. W. H. Wilson, the Rev. L. V. Bibby, Mr. N. B. Gibbona, and Mr. G. H. Mackley, M.P. Mr. Mackley said that Arbor Day is day of dedication to treoi co that we may better appreciate ti'<-ir value to the nation. The trees 'if New Zealand have been one of the country's greatest assets. It was unfortunate said Mr. Mackley, that during t£e past 100 years forests which have taken thousands of years to grow to maturity had been destroyed and to-day there is not only a shortage of timbers but a scarcity of shade and shelter.
