HUTT RIVER BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held on Tuesday afternoon. Present., ftlr. F..; S. .He-wer (chairman), and Messrs H. Y. Draper A. .Maud, J. S. Young and Dr. B. J. Dudley. An application from a firm of manufacturers for permission to. take sand from one of the board's sections 011 Seaview Rad. was declined It. was agreed to grant a license to M.H.S. Ltd., to operate a shingle plant at the north end' of Gear Island. It was decided that, the Hoard be represented at. the forthcoming Com. mission in connection wit it the propoet'l harbour development at the o.'. iKH y. The draft estimates for the year were considered by the board and approved. The clerk, Mr. A. J. Gearing, presented the audited balance sheet without any adverse comment from the Audit Department. The chairman said it was very gratifying' to | have the board's accounts kept in such a satisfactory manner and congratulated Mr. Gearing and his stall' on their efficiency. ENGINEER'S REPORT The Engineer. Mr. H. SI ad den, reported that at Taita Gorge, Seagar's, Routley's and I'.arnes", conditions are go* d and steadily improving. Some attention is required at Bentley's. August's and Hooper's, for soine chains. In this area there is a tendency to erosion. As the Government has acquired all these properties for housing development, and it may be desirable to do more comprehensive work than would be considered the ordinary function of the board. Steady improvement is continuing on the native land and Dickie's (left bank). Willow planting has been continued on the beaches as they build up. At Elmore's new shingle plant at Walker's Island and Mabey Road, shingle plant conditions are much improved. All the work carried out in recent months is functioning satisfactorily. At the right bank, at the end of Charles Street, there is still a considerable set. The willow work here has been effective, but a further groyne is desirable. At Stellins (left bank- channel conditions are good but destruction of willows by stock continues. The ( Public Works Department operations have now been transferred to the Hutt Golf Links where there are considerable accumu lations of shingle. Large volumes of shingle have been moved by the Department from the Avery beach further upstream, l)enefi<jial results. An- extension of 'the willow work has been continued upstream from the Belmont shingle plant. A new groyne has been constructed'at Heggie's upstream from the, electric sub-station. For the period under review the outside staff has been mployed on willow protective work at. Belmont plant and at. Road, concrete plant, metal boulder groyne at Heggie's and willoto' planting at native land and Dickie's,' Denton Channel and top end of I?utt Golf Links.
