The Hutt News Wednesday, June 14, 1944. HUTT VALLEY PIPE BAND
<$> — Possibly there are few people in the Hutt Valley who realise that in their midst they have a body of men who for the last I'll years have given "unstintingly of their time to the community without asking for any other reward than that of service and the love of the national music of their country. We refer (o the small body of men who in 191'.") formed themselves into a community for the purpose of fostering the native music of Scotland — their native land. The outcome of that gain ing was the formation of the Hut! Valley Pipe Band which for many years has enlivened many gatherings by its spirited music. It is the proud boast of its members that they have never refused to give their services when called upon. In all t'ros-. - they must have played a prominent part in assisting to raise large sums of money for many worthwhile objects. . Unfortunately the small donations they have collected from this method of service has not in any way compensated the pipers for their out-of-pocket expenses and te <1
they are faced with the problem ol replacing their uniforms and general equipment from no other source than their own pockets. There are also a number of young men and boys who are anxious to swell the rank, of the Pipe Band but to be effective they must be properly equipped, anu be relieved of too much financial re sponsibility. It will also be necessary, we all hope, in the not too distant future, to make it possible for those members of the Band nton active service, to take up then former positions in the Band when thy return from the war. Th s !'• should virtually belong to the people of the whole Hutt Valley, from Pe tone to Upper Hutt, and including the Eastern Bays, for their services are made available to the residents-, of all those districts, and on many occasions the Band has represented the Hutt Valley at gatherings held in Wellington. The Band is a credit to the district and an organisation of ,which every citizen should be proud, and it deserves the financial support of the residents and the local bodies in the Hutt Valley. It is hoped that in the near future a public appeal will be made on their behalf. The honorary secretary is Mr. T. Muir, Avon Street, Lower Hutt.
