The founding of the Hutt Valley Art Teachers Association will be acclaimed by those interested in the encouragement and stimulation of things cultural in the Valley with deep satisfaction. Having recently attained the status of a city, Lower liuit itseif provides plenty jf scope in this direction, but the association embraces the •■•whole of the Valley, and its , inauguration certainly marks « a . cultural milestone. Mr. | Errol Mutr, one of the prime, movers, : feels, to quote the |>ld adage, that a prophet is seldjpm* honoured in his own country, $ut the exploration of talent lias brought to light the fact that there is an amazing amount, latent or otherwise, in the Valley. The initial inspiration was Mjs. Berwyn 'Gibbons, an. erstwune Cliriaichurch ' elocutionist now ;In our midst, and she suggested to Mr. Errol MurT; known Hutt elocutionist, that a Competitions Soicety be formed u in" the Valley. While accepting the proposal, Mr. Muir earned it much further in suggesting a society of teachers in the Valley be formed, And this body would" discuss all / such projects. A meeting recently held to discuss the formation of a competitions society was largely attended and much enthusiasm ' waslevlnced. Adjudicators for the competitions are to be drawn from all' parts of the Dominion, 1 with tibvious advantages ih many ways: The association hopes to encourage the variouk arts, and periodical meetings will' be held for the discussion 'of the Various branches jpt art, with demonstrations. The Association also hopes to assist worthy causes, and in this direction tse Woburn > .Community Kindergarten is fortunate in being the first |o benefit,' for 'the association is staging a concert,® their initial effort, v at St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, 011 Thursday, November 18th, to benefit the funds of the Kindergarten, it is quite unnecessary- to state thfit 'this concert will oe of the. highest order, anil'jth.e programme will Include items by the foremost teachers of the Valley and their puplk The programme will include ballet, e.oq'ujuiftary apd vocal and instrumental ffiugjp, and teachers wso wiii either themselves, or whose p.upils will be contributing to the programme include Mrs. Al«ia Millward, whose choir will $e •heard; Mrs- Noel "Taylor (sittxring pupils) Miss Thea Smith (elocution), 'ikiss Billie Stevens, Mljs Heather Wright, Miss Pauline Maithews, ans Miss Kathleen Bartofh (dancing); Mrs-. McLaughin (villin); Mrs. Isabel Halligan (elocutionary); Mrs. Farquhar White, aisl Miss Peggy Conway, Miss Leonl Wright and. Mr. Jackson (sihgihg), and to complete this splendid v varied fare,. ,Mrs. Berwyn Gibbons and Mr. Errol Muir are presenting a sketch. _ The affair is under the
