HOUSE NUMBERING AND FOOTPATHS
The following letter was received some time ago following an article published on street numbering but was held over owing to pressure on space. ' . Sir, —You are doing a public service in drawing attention on various occasions to the faulty system that exists in house numbering in the City of Lower Hutt. Some of me streets are numbered correctly, viz., even numbers on right side of streets going south to north, and west to east. High Street, Waterloo Road, and Knights Road among others with even numbers on the righthand side of streets, but the numbers on houses require revising as in some instances there is a difference of from 4 to 8 between houses next to each other. Boulcott Street and Grierson Street are numbered correctly (west to east and south to north), but not so with Troon Crescent. Hathaway Avenue and Military Road, the same applies to Whites Line West, vicinity of Leigliton Avenue, Riverside Drive and many other streets in that part of the city. I should, imagine that the Engineer's Department should see that numbers were correctly placed on gate posts or letter boxes. With regard to footpaths and Channels, they are simply a disgrace Apparently in many instances the levels are not correct and the water cannot get . away. Money is wasted in labour and material in winter by using tar and sand at a seiison when the« materials will not bind, also no attempt is made to fill up depressions (some of which are miniature switchbacks), before tar and sand is applied, and the first shower of rain washes the sand into the channels. Trusting the City Council will give these matters attention. —I am etc., PROGRESS.
