Jill. l\ J. KIIAXCR Air. Frederick James France, Lower HutL. son of lite late Dr. Charles France, one of Wellington's best known (-any i»lisicia n.y. died al Liit> residence; of his daughter, Mrs. A. B. Folej, Takapau. Uawke's Bay. recently, al the age o.f SI. Mr. France resided in Lower Unit for about 10 years and wan at one tiJnt• clerk to the Hull. County Council. He was born in Wellington and educated at Wei 1 i nglou College, and was for many years a member of the Old Naval Brigade in which lie was champion rille shot. lie was for many years on the staff of the Wellington City Council'. Ho married Mareella .Minnie Carey, of Ireland, in 1888 who predeceased him seven years ago. The late Mr France leaves two daughters. Mrs. A. B. Foley, Takapau, and Mrs. E.i O'Connell, Lower Hutt. and two sons, Messrs C. H. France. Palmerston North and O. T. France, Lower Hutt, and six grand-children. The funeral took place at Takapau. Born in Bath, England, in 184 8, she came to New Zealand with her parents in the ship 'John Phillips", arriving at New Plymouth in 1851. She had memories of being carried ashore by the Maoris, and of her early life in the bush at Omata. During the Maori war the women and children were sent to the Barracks 011 Marsden Hill during critical times. After a few years

they gave up their farm at Omnia and went to live in Nelson, and there: .she remained until her niarriaj;e to the late Robert Lee, Inspector of Schools. She was the daughter of llu: late .lohn Cully the well-
