RECLAMATION OF WASTE MATERIAL

Sir, —Since it has become generally known that the writer has undertaken the organising of the collecs lion or the above, I have had quite i a number of enquiries from citizens who have realised the seriousness P of the position, and have cleared - out their bookshelves of all old magazines, books, papers, etc., that I are of no further use, and are now J anxious to have them collected. While it is hoped that all house- • holders will follow their example, " l hey are asked to again store them " away till such time us they are call,r ed lor. It must be understood that 3 it would be impossible to handle all 3 the tons of such unused matter, of r this sort, at once, and we would ' only have another case as the bottle " collection. This waste paper constitutes the ' reserve which we will- have to fall back on, and your.. bopltshelves are the storage of the same. Our duty • is, first to check the waste that goes on in our shops, offices, factories, • and schools. Having organised the collection of this, collectors will call on the householders for their daily waste, and as the shortage becomes more acute thfeir books, perhaps through the schools, or some other organisation, Uy this moans we will have a continuous supply reach ing the depots for, a much longer period. Householders should, in the meantime, save all clean paper or cardboard and store them in a clean sugar bag or sack, .till they are called upon to deliver it to the collector, or take it to one of "the depots we hope to establish through out the city. . The organising of t ( his collection will be quite an-undertaking, and will require a large committee to make it effective, and as the work is of National importance, I feel quite sure that there will be a large number willing to assist. Already the Chamber of Commerce has appointed two of their members to act on ti'e committee and several other citizens have offered their services. All those willing to assist are requested to attend a meeting to be held at the Council Chambers on Thursday evening, March 19th, at 7,30. If you cannot attend this meeting and are willing to assist, will you please ring Mr. H. S. Dudding, telephone 63-931.—1 am etc, H. S. DUDDING.
