CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce was held 011 Wednesday evening. The president, Mr. C. E. Moran, occupied the chair. Police Station Following on the representations of the Chamber in regard to the lack of accommodation at the Police Station, the Minister in Charge of the Police Department wrote that negotiations were proceeding for the purchase of a section of land and if these were successful the erection of the new Police Station will be commenced as soon as possible. Gas in Government Houses Some months ago the Chamber had offered a suggestion to the Government Housing Department that the installation of gas into Government houses would be a means of conserving electric power. As the suggestion had been ignored by the Department, it was decided to refer the matter to the acting member for the district, Mr. H. E. Combs. Cycle Stands Satisfaction was expressed ' that the City Council had been able to comply with the suggestion of the Chamber to erect more cycle stands in High Street. These were found to be of inestimable value in view of the increased use of bicycles. Dogs It was decided to point out to the City Council that, despite the new by-law framed to control the dog nuisance; the annoyance was as great as ever in High Street, and many shop keepers were complaining of the insanitary conditions outside their premises. Public Danger The storage of large quantities of inflammable road sealing material Jat the council yards was considered to bo a public danger in view of the possibility of enemy action. It was decided to send the following resolution to the City Council: "This Chamber views with concern , the storage of tar primer and road sealing material in the centre of the city, and in view of the possible danger from incendiary bombs is of the i opinion that such inflammable material should be removed to a place of lesser risk. liei'iise Collection It was decided to refer the complaint regarding rubbish collection
