— J ■!'!V : LOWER HUTT Cl/TTB . 5 j, r , ;• .j ANNUAL REPORT " The annual report of the Lower Hutt A.A. Hansen; Horman Cup, Mr. C, Horribin; Tresider Cup, Mr. R1 Swain; Fraser Cup, Mr. J. Sparkes;' James Cup, Miss L. Rosoman; Riddlford Cup, not competed for;. Monigatti Cup, Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club. Miniatures were handed to the winners of the various trophies. Dewar Shield. It was the intention of the committee to hold a DeWar Shield meeting, and action was taken to give effect to . this proposal. Although permission was granted by the centre, it was found that the meeting could not be proceeded with on the date fixed because of counter attractions, and the centre held the meeting at Hataitai on Ist February. At this meeting the club entered eight teams. The second Dewar Shieid meeting was held at Hataitai on Saturday, Ist March, and the club again entered eight teams. At this meeting the club secured third place in the final shield points. Returned Soldiers' Association. The R.S.A. and tHte 50,000 Club held a carnival in the Recreation Ground during the week ended Bth February for the purpose of obtaining funds to build a club room. The Lower Hutt Amatuer Athletic Club assisted this worthy object by conducting on the opening jvening a sports meeting. An extensive and attractive programme .vas provided, and the meeting was well attended and added interest to the carnival. Monday Night Meeting. Early in the season the black-out restrictions prevented the use of the floodlights in the Recreation Ground and the club had to revert to the holding of these meetings at 6.30 p.m. Cycling. The club again affiliated with the Cycling Centre, and Messrs. N. Scrimgeour and N. Jonassen acted as delegates to that organisation. Nae Nae Meeting. Early in the year the club decid ed to try the experiment of holding an afternoon meeting at the Nae Nae Reserve. Unfortunately, very heavy raiu set in before the meeting, uml the venture had to be abandoned after considerable expense had been incurred. Whilst the ha'zard of bad weather is always present, it. was distinctly unfortunate in this case, as it lias set the club back in a part of tiie district where it appeared that sporting activities might reasonably be expected to be weil supported. Provincial Championships. The provincial championships were held on the Basin Reserve in February, and the club was weil represented by no less than 12 of its 20 members, and these competitors secured 10 placings. The results were highly satisfactory, and the individual members are to be congratulated on the results attained. H. Potter won the 100 yards and 220 yards junior championships; R. G. Swain the one mile junior event; J. Cole won the junior discus; and Miss Rosoman the 75 yards and 100 yards ladies' events. In the senior events, R. Wills was third in the 44-0 yards; A. The women's and junior national championships, were held at Wanganui on Saturday, Bth March, and the club was represented by Messrs. Potter, Swain,, J. Cole and MissRosoman. In accordance with the decision of the New. Zealand Council, no senior events were contested for, this being a condition which will rule for the duration of the war. H. Potter competed in the 100 yards and 220 yards championships; R Swain in the 880 yards and one mile; J. Cole in the discus and shot put; and Miss Rosoman in the 75 yards, 100 yafrls and 220 yards ladies' championship. In addition these runners competed in the relay race. H. Dances, The social activities of the club were more prominent this year than has been the case for quite a long time, and this is due to the enterprise and enthusiasm of the social committee.
