LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
ANNUAL EVENING MEETING The Rev. E. W. Batts was guestspeaker at the League of Mothers' i annual evening meeting, which took < place in the Horticultural Hall re- i cently. The president, Mrs. W. 0. ( Gibb, presided over a large attend- ; ance, which included a number of men-folk. 1 The league Choir, under Mrs. 11. < S. Barton, entertained with "Oh t Peaceful Night," "Fly, Singing -I'd t Ply," "Brother James's Air," and i "The Apple Woman." Two tenor f solos, "Come to the Fair" and "The 1 Old Clock," were presented by Mr. t Turley, and an instrumental trio by o Mesdamfes E. F. Roth well, K. J. c Caverhill and Mr. Palmer. c Rev. Batts took as his topic J "Some Memories of Egypt, Pales- r tine and Syria." "The Suez Canal a is the jugular vein of the British 2 Empire," he said, "thus these areas, e for centuries the massing, marching, 7 and battle ground of armies, are at li present the most strategic in the I world.." i' In sketching the lines of a tour v from the Gulf of Suez to Ballbek. ]\ the speaker brought out the charm I and romance of the three countries, h but at the same time did not mini- 1 mise the appalling filth, poverty, v and wickedness found in many of v the leading cities. p • Mr. Hooson moved a vote of s thanks to Rev.
