City Council

The monthly meeting of' the Lower Hutt City Council waß held on Monday - evening. Present: The Ma"yor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), Crs. F. S. Hewer, A. Marshall, 0. L. Giesen, E. P. Hay; H. S. Dudding, H. F. Muir, W. Gregory and F. Campbell;

Motions of sympathy Were passed with the relativea of the late Sir George Troup and Major Douglas. •'

Congratulations Were conveyed to Wing Commander P. Jameson, who had recently been awarded a bar to his D.F.C.

The Waiwhetu Plunket ' Society conveyed its thanks to the council for its decision to forego the usual fees for the building permit, etc., for its proposed building at Waterloo.

It was decided to grant the application of the Wellington R.S.A. to sell roses in the streets of the city on Friday, November 14th, the proceeds to be in aid of the building fund. The by-laws committee reported that it had met a deputation of beekeepers, and in view of the representations made it did not appear desirably that any further action should be taken to formulate a bylaw for their control.

The librarian's report again showed substantial increases in all departments.

The Hutt District Cricket Club was granted the use of five match wickets and two practice wickets on the Recreation Ground" for the ensuing season on the same terms as last year. Cr. Muir asked that more attention should be given to preparation of the practice wickets. The appointment of Mr. Alex. Campbell as works foreman was confirmed. The city engineer advised that the storm damage within the city area was comparatively slight, most of It occurring on hill roads, where the outside of some of the carriageways has given way. It was estimated that £.'iso will be required to repair this damage. Authority was given for the work to be put in hand. Cr. Gregory said he would ■like to compliment the engineer and his staff on the efficient manner in which the work was carried out. During the month 159 building permits were Issued to the value of £24,124, as against 29 to the value of £18,623 for the corresponding period last year.
