HUTT VALLEY LEAGUE

$ ANNUAL SOCIAL The annual social evening and presentation of trophies of the Hutt Valley League, Wellington Football Association, was held in St. James's Hall recently. In addition to the members of the management committee of the Hutt Valley League and approximately one hundred boys who play Association football in the League, there were present the Hon. W. E. Mr. Riddolls then went on to outline a proposed scheme for next season, under which the Hutt Valley League would control all local* Association football for boys under the age of eighteen years. •: Before presenting the trophies won during the season, Mr. fitruy, > addressed the boys. He emphasised the value of games in encouraging physical and moral development, and outlined the work of the physical Welfare Branch, stating that but for the intervention of the war the function would have been taking place in the Hutt Valley's own sports centre. Kempthorne ( secretary of the Anglican Boys' Home, representatives of Association Football Clubs in the Hutt Valley, the coaches of the Hutt Valley League teams, and many parents of the boys and other supporters of Association football. Mr. T. H. Gifford, chairman of the management committee, in introducing Mr. Parry, expressed the appreciation of the management committee and players at Mr. Parry's presence at the gathering, which was an Indication of his interest in sport in general, and particularly in the work being done by the Hutt Valley League for the physical welfare of the boys of the Hutt Valley. After introducing the other guests, Mr. Gifford went on to review the season's activities and to outline the work of the Hutt Valley League, which now of eight teams of boys under the age ,'of sixteen years, a strength which has been attained in spite of the fact that the primary schools in the Hutt Valley do not play Association football. The secretary, Mr. A. W. Riddolls, then announced the results of the championship which resulted in a tie between the Anglican A and Lower Hutt teams, and the Knockout competition, which was won by Anglican A. He also referred to the success that had been attainedby teams which had graduated from the Hutt Valley League to the higher grades of the Wellington Foot-* ball Association's competitions, which showed that the Hiitt Valley League was. developing players of a

standard of play attained during the season which he said was consistent with the Hutt Valley's unequalled reputation in many branches of sport. He went on to emphasise the need for a spirit of tolerance in sport, stating that a game played under compulsion was of little value, the only game worth playing being that chosen by the player of his own free will. He then presented the trophies to the successful teams. During the evening those present were entertained by instrumental and vocal items presented by several» of the boys, and by an amusing and interesting mtoion picture entertain i»ent presented by Mr A. B. Malyon. Mr. W. J. Arcus gave a highly en-, 'M tertaining display of conjuring. The ■ vocal items were accompanied by 1 Rev. M. R. Pirani.
