Hutt Hospital

WORK NURSES' HOME

FOUNDATION EXCAVATION

Excavation has begun on the site of the projected Hutt Valley Hospital for the foundations of the nurßes' home. The nursef}' home is to be at the rear of the land.

The hospital Bite is in High Street, about 10 chains north of the northern entrance of Kings Crescent, nearly opposite Boulcott Street. The main entrance to the hospital will j ultimately be from High Street, but at present the nurses' home entrance is from Copeland Street.

The nurses's home will comprise a central administrative block of three stories occupying a ground space of 76ft. by 48ft. From each ejnd of this block will project a wing at an angle of some 45 degrees, each wing being 160 ft. long and 32ft. wide. The building will thus have the shape of a V, with the central block at the apex.

The wings will be of two stories. The ground and first floors of the central block will contain the public and private waiting and sittingrooms, with the usual offices. The top floor will contain a large lecture hall and three smaller halls fitted for demonstrations for the staff, of cookery, nursing and laundry work respectively. There will be also a

library and a sewing room. The two wings will be principally occupied by bedrooms, of which there will be 103.

The main approach to the central block, which faces north, will be between the two wings, so that the whole building will act: as a "suntrap." There will be a wide terraced entrance to the central block.

The building will be of reinforced concrete, including the floors, which will be covered with linoleum laid on a special foundation on top of the concrete. The roof will be of tiles.

The building was designed by Messrs. Crichton, McKay and Haughton, and is being built by the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd.
