BUILDING HOSTS

A recommendation to tlio by-laws committee, that tlie question of redrafting the building by-laws with a view to reducing the high cost of building, was mentioned by Cr. C. J. Ashton at Monday's Council mooting. Cr. Ashton urged that in going into this question the services of plumbers and others interested in the building trade should be coopted. He said tliab each year Ihc building restrictions were becoming more difficult, and it was time some relief was given. Christchurcli had gone into the question, an ,i ;1H :i result a considerable saving had been made in the cost. The Mayor agreed that such an investigation might be well worth while, but pointed out. that there was 'already a movement to standardise the building by-laws throughout the country. The lower cost of timber in Christchurcli was largely responsible for the, chcaper building. The standard of building in the Hutt was particularly high, and it was not advisable to sacrifice quality for cheapness. The motion was seconded by Cr. Morrison and referred to the bylaws committee for consideration.
