There was a fair attendance at the April meeting of the. Tuita Women's Institute, which was held recently. The president, Mrs. F. Hunter, made reference to the passing of the late Prime Minister, and as a mark of respect members stood in silence. After members and visitors had been welcomed, the business of the meeting was dealt with. The Arts and Crafts Circle have decided to concentrate on patriotic work this season. The president thanked mem- ! for the splendid response, they i -to an appeal for articles to *jjs gift parcels for soldiers.' •> • i : After afternoon tea had been served ( by Mrs. Bonthorne and helpers, a roll-call entitled "My chief at institute meetings," Proved very interesting, nfuch amusement being caused by some of the remarks. • The competition for tbe month, which was for the best knitted balaclava, was won by Mrs. Weston, with Mrs. McElwain second, and the best flower in the garden by Mrs. Bonthorne, with Mrs. Dyer second. STOKES VALLEY BKAXCH The annual meeting of the Stokes Valley Women's Institute was held recently in the Stokes Valley Hall, Mrs. Hurney presiding. Officers for the year were appointed as follows:^ President, Mrs. Comb; vice-presi-dents, Jtesftames- Hurney and HuSe; Mrs. Taylor; treasurer,. Mrs. Melrose; conifiiittee, Mesdames Simon, Freeman, Kay, Firmston, Ljster, Swansin and Boyce. The retiring president stnd secreary were presented" with flowers and gifts, as'were the treasurer, tea convenor and hall decorator. Delegates were appointed for the forthcoming council meeting and conference, and a collection taken up to provide parcels for the soldiers. During the rest of the afternoon the bring and buy stall was well patronised, and members were entertained by a pianoforte duet delightfully rendered by two visitors from Christchurch.
