MR. I). MCCASKIIjIJ

Recently a very pleasant function took place in the Horticultural Hall, when Mr. D. McCaskill, senior inspector of primary schools in the Wellington Education Board, was farewelled by a large gathering of teachers from schools in the Hutt Valley. Prior to afternoon tea; the guests of honour, Mr. and Mrs. D. McCaskill, were welcomed in a happy spech by Mr. F. G. Thompson, headmaster of Trentham school. Apologies were received from members of the inspectorate, who were absent from Wellington, Mr. W. Dyer (chairman of the Wellington Education Board), Mr. J. Stonehouse (member of the board for Lower Hutt), the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Cbllege, and of. St. Peter and St. Paul, and many others.

- A striking tribute to the untiring work of Mr. McCaskill in the infant department was paid by Miss M. Duff, infant mistress of Eastern Hutt School. She referred to the esteem in which he was held by all infant teachers, who regarded him as a friend and adviser. As president of the llutt Valley branch of the N.Z.E.1., another fine tribute was paid by Mr. M. S. Quigley. Making eulogistic reference to the regard in which the senior inspector was held, he mentioned the good judgment, tactt'ulness and sense of justice always displayed by him. In making a presentation on behalf of Hutt Valley teachers, Mr. Thompson expressed the regrei f<!t by all at Mr. McCaskiU'B retireme nt, from the. service, and presented liim with a standard lamp and u silver cigarette case. In returning thanks, Mr. McCaskill, in an interesting speech, outlined his reasons for working chiefly in the infant departments of Schools, and recounted many varied experiences he had had as an Inspector.'- , .
