AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OPENING OF SEASON Favoured with ideal weather conditions last Monday night, the Wellington' Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association opened the season at the Hutt Recreation Ground, when there was a fair attendance of the general public, who were treated to a very high standard of performances. The new flood-lighing system was much appreciated and gave spectators a splendid view of the whole track and competitors. The displays given l>y the lady pupils of the Y.M.C.A., under the capable direction of Mr, C. L. Cato, added much pleasure to the evening, The president of the Wellington Centre, Mr. A. C. Kitto, congratulated the Borough Council on its provision of such ail outstanding lighting system, and paid tribute to Mr. Arthur Marshall for the time, energy and persuasive power he had brought to bear to have the lights installed. The Hon. Walter Nash, in declaring the season open, congratulated the centre on their enterprise, and wished the Hutt Club every success. He assured them that the Government would give every assistance for the development of the physical welfare of the community. During the evening the Lower Hutt Civic Band rendered a delightful musical programme. The committee responsible for the meeting are to be congratulated on whait was a thoroughly well organised meeting, every event being run to time and the comfort of the public and competitors being well considered.
