Labour Day Gala

YOUTH PAGEANT OF THE CENTURY INTER-HOUSE GIRLS' STRATION PROGRAMME " An attraction that should provide entertainment for young and old alike has been organised by the combined committees of the 50 Thousand Club and the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A, for presentation to the public on Labour Day, 23rd October ,and will provide sessions both afternoon and night. Many of the items are of a highly spectacular nature, and the special lighting effects being brought into effect in the evening should indeed prove a new and added attraction to outdoor recreation. Perhaps pride of place on the programme should go to the demonstration by Inter-House Girls' Teams. Several teams have been training very thoroughly for the past few weeks, and the standard of work attained is now a very high one. Such firms as Lever Bros., W. D. and H. 0. Wills, Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Co., Griffins and Sons, are suitably represented by snappily uniformed teams, and other groups of business girls and the Y.M.C.A., have also entered for this exhilarating exhibition. The form of competition will consist of a quickstep routine, which includes wheeling, turning, halting and counter-marching, and is followed by a nfassed demonstration of callisthenics which should set a high standard for efficiency of accomplishment. The remaining portion of the inter-house girls' events consists of . competitive games and relays, and it is this part of the programme that will provide novel athletic events which are intensely exciting and enlivening. Interspersed between the inter-.i )use girls' events will be exhibitions of Daring Feats by N.Z.'s Leading Gymnasts. Sensational stunts on the roman rings will provide thrills to equal any circus act, and the thrilling circles and turns on the horizontal bar will prove breath-taking to those not accustomed to seeing these daring feats performed. The tumbling and acrobatics should be of a very high order, and flip-F.aps, somersaults, round-offs and all the known tricks will be demonstrated by exponents of the art. In addition to the above-mentioned gymnastic events human pyramid building will be shown by the boys and girls of the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A.

An -interesting interlude in the evening programme will be a Display by the Scouts of the Hutt Valley and Bays District. The main items will centre "(Hind the pitching of camp by the boys. Tents will be erected and the camp fires lit ready for the evening meal after the day's hike. A flagpole and signalling tower will be run up in the traditional pioneering tyle, and many sidelights on the work of the boys while in camp will be seen. Items Staged by the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. During the afternoon and evening several items are to be presented by the boys and girls of our local assoication, and these will take the form of colourful ballets, dances, electric club swinging, and novel drill numbers. There will also s be a demonstration to this comprehensive programme by the Pupils of the Hutt Valley Jigli School. There is little need to say more than this item will prove up to the usual high sandard set by the school, and will prove very instructive to all spectators. Fire Brigade Perhaps the most interesting part of the programme will be provided by the combined fire brigades of Lower Hutt and Petone. Their item is to consist of a brilliantlylighted exhibition of hose work and the control of powerful streams of water. With the addition of coloured lighting the brigades will endeavour to show one of the largest coloured fountains in the world.

Pylon Lighting System. With the inauguration of the pylon lighting system that is being erected on the Hutt Recreation Grounds, the evening perform uice will be of special interest to all lovers of sport. Some idea of the possibilities of this new method of lighting will be gained by those present. No doubt the result of this 80,000 candle-power lighting will be the fore-runner of many evening sports. Several Bands in Attendance During the afternoon and evening selections will be rendered by the High School Boys' Band, Civic and Municipal Bands and the Highland Pipe Band. The whole programme should be immensely interesting, and the project deserves the wuolehearted support of the public. The pageant will be opened at 2.30 p.m. by the Hon. W. E. and the Hon. Walter Nash, proceeded by a grand parade, starting from the Hutt Bridge at 2.30 p.m. The /official lighting of the new pylon lighting system will be performed by his Worship the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Andrews, at 8 p.m. Handsome trophies have been donated for yearly competition by the inter-house girls' teams; a shield donated by N.Z. Sawmillers; champion games team cup, donated by the "Hutt News." Further details of this a reat event will be gained, from an inset in this issue.
