Borough Council

The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday night. Present, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, Cra. W. Morrison, A. Marshall, W. F. Hall, E. P. Hay, J. F. -Vogel, H. V. Horlor and W. Gregory. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of the late Sir ■ Thomas Wilford > and Mr. C. E. , Dowland. j HOSPITAL BOARD Advice was received from the Wellington Hospital Board that it had been unanimously decided to apply to the Loans Board for permission to raise the sum of £435,000 for hospital building purposes. HALL LICENSES. On the recommendation of the by-laws, committee, the town clerk was instructed to issue licenses to Birch. Street Hali and the Horticultural Hall. Endorsed to the effect that no pass out checks % are to be issued or re-admission .granted to these halls. GARAGES. Attention was drawn to the fact ' that two motor garages had been erected . without permits having been obtained. As the offences had been committed in ignorance of the the by-law, it was agreed to forego prosecution. The committee desired it to be known that in future instances of buildings being erected without securing permits may be , .more severely dealt with. RAND REPORT The band report covering the month of June stated that eight practices were held during the month, with an average attendance of 21 members. Three concerts were given during the period, namely, at Riddiford Park, Wellington Public Hospital and the Hobson Street Hospital. Public performances have been arranged for the current month, and the report adds that the enthusiasm of the members is very keen, a good spirit prevailing in the band. Conductor. —On the resignation of the previous conductor, Mr. Richards was appointed in an acting capacity, and the committee's recommendation that he be confirmed in his appointment was carried. New Instruments. —The committee advised that favourable arrangements had been made for the procuring of a new set of instruments, and the necessary formalities complied with regarding the procuring of import license. The instruments are being procured through Messrs. Chas. Begg and Co. at an approximate cost of £995. HUTT BRIDGE Council agreed to comply with the request of the Wellington City Council to pay its share of the £780 required for the maintenance of the Pipe Bridge during the next three years. TAXI DRIVERS' LICENSES The Transport Department wrote upholding the policy of the council in refusing to issue temporary driving licenses, as there was (no such provision in the regulations. NORMANDALE CROSSING The Public Works Department advised that it was proposed to close the Normandale Crossing permanently, and divert all traffic to the Marsden Street crossing .in connection with the widening of the Western Hutt Road. POSITION OF ACCOUNTANT Mr. Blackmore, who is undergoing a serious illness, was granted leave of absence, and as he is not likely to return to duty, Mr. T. G. Richardson, of the Stratford Borough -Council, was appointed to the position of borough accountant. AVIAItY The reserves committee reported that the aviary which had been erected in Riddiford Park was creating a great amount of interest. CROQUET LAWNS The Hutt Bowling and Croquet Club was granted the use of a green in Riddiford Park for the forthcoming season at a rental of £20. CRICKET WICKETS I The Hutt District Cricket Club was granted the use of six wickets and two practice wickets on the Recreation Ground for the coming season at a rental of £100 with certain reservations for " use for other purposes on certain days in connection with the Centenary. BUILDING PERMITS . . The building permits for the month were: Dwellings in wood, 17, value £18,983; dwellings in concrete, 4, £5441; aditions to dwellings, 20, £2779; additions to shops, 2, £120; other buildings, 2, £600; oil burning plant, 1, £100.—Totals, petrol pump installation, 1, £150; 47, £28,273. Corresponding month jF last year, 30, £27,103. '■W* EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS On the motion of Cr, Vogle, y committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Morrison, Gregory and the mover was set up to bring down suggestions in regard to the safety of the borough in case of an emergency. j APPOINTMENTS [ At Monday's Council meeting, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, was elected as council's representative to fill the vacancy on the Hutt Valley Power Board caused by the death of Mr. C. E. Dowland, and Cr. A. Marshall was elected to the Taita Cemetery Board.
