will be required for urban purposes, have already purchased land in other districts. "Under the circumstances disclosed by the investigation, the Government now feels justified in proceeding immediately with an active policy of housing .development in the Hutt Valley in conjunction with the more intensive development of the lands now being utilised for industrial purposes. "This programme will absorb not less than 280 acres of land per year for the next five years, or practically the whole of the land which is at present under notice of intention to take. "The programme of work will be so arranged that it should be possible to let each grower know in advance the date on which he will be required to give up possession of his land. Every effort will be made in the first year to develop -lands which are not utilised or suitable for market garden purposes, provided that this permits of reasonably economic type of development in the provision of public utilities and services. In this, way the growers should h/ive at least one full growing year and some of them, three, four, or even five years in which to make other arrangements.
"The Government in its desire to give the growers a square deal and to ensure the continuity of supplies of fresh vegetables to the Wellington market,'" said Mr. Savage, "has decided to acquire an area of approximately 2003 acres of land in the Otaki-Levin district suitable' for market gardening and to lay out this land as a rural community for approximately 100 families, complete with housing, schools, and other community buildings. This land, together with the housing facilities, will be made. availaDie in the first instance at am economic rental to the growers displaced by the housing and industrial developments in the valley.
- "The wisdom and necessity, of this step is proved by the fact that there has been unmistakable evidence within the last few weeks that the possible displacement of the Hutt Valley gardeners is forcing up the price of market garden land;, in the Otaki-Leviii area ivhere the industry is already carried on on a substantial scale. .
