GAS PROTECTION
"Gas Protection iu England" was the subject of a-public address delivered on Thursday night in the Horticultural Hall by Dr. Alan Tennent to members of the local branch of the New Zealand Defence League. Dr. Tennent speaks witli authority on the subject, as he studied the latest methods of development .used in Army training and defence during a' recent visit to England. He opened his talk with a description of the first gas attacks during the Great War and showed the increasing appreciation" of gas as a weapon for destructive warfare, instancing the various types of gas now used for attack. Although gas was so dastardly in effect, both physically and morally,.methods of protection from such methods were quite simple and effective. He outlined all the methods of protection and decontamination used in civilian . and military protection—instancing lime white-wash to counteract the external effects of mustard gas when this is treated on the spot. Dr. Tennent's talk , was vividly illustrated by an excellent, series of lantern slides showing the actual workings of field ambulance and Red Cross dressing stations. Mrs. P. S. Gillingham, who was 111 the chair, moved a warm vote of thanks to the speaker, and Mr. Hewitt (secretary of the Defence League) also spoke briefly.
