Correspondence
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l was particuarly interested to read th*6 eifusion of your local heavenly correspondent* the Ven. F. H, Petrie, Archdeacon of Rangitikei, in your ißSue of Wednesday, March 8, 1939. As an example of ecclesiastical stupidity, this must be almost a classic. After "saying many things about "Our Blessed Lord," and duck-shoving around the point, your liaison officer between the spiritual realms and these mundame plains where one has to work for a living, says, "The character of the clergy depends in no small degree on tlje people. If the people demand a high standard, the clergy will be compelled to try to attain it" . . . and so on. Brought up in the rigorous Christian atfmosphere of a Nonconformist household, one always thought that those who made their livings off the Christian Teacher—and a reasonable living, too—were leaders of ethical thought. Thank you for the information and for the assurance that preachers are more interested in what is more acceptable than what is the truth. —I am, etc., SUSPICIOUS.
