Hutt Valley Queen Carnival

The Queen Carnival which is being ;:uu to raise funds for the Centennial memorial is rapidly gaining pace. The Motor Industry has already selected a queen (Miss Natalie Whiteman) and the committee has devised some novel ways ol' raising money. The Returned Soldiers' Association has selected Miss Joan Cowie as their nominee, and intend to further her interests by nitons of a copper trail and other functions calculated to extricate the nimble coin from well wishers. The Manufacturers have had enthusiastic meetings, and are each working for a queen of their own, the idea being to have a competition among themselves, and the queen raising the largest amount will participate in the main queen contest. A queen will be nominated by six big organisations Messrs. W. D. and H. 0. Wills, the Wellington Woollen Mills, N.Z. Slippers, Lever Brothers, Griffin and Co. Ltd., and Dominion Dyers. The women's organisations' queen committee held a garden party on Saturday last at Mrs. Brown's residence, Taita, which was very successful. Committees are being set up all through the Hutt Valley and Eastbourne for the purpose of furthering the interests of this organisation's queen. A railways queen has not yet been decided on, and cinemas have decided not to have a 'queen, but they have intimated that any functions held in their theatres will be granted the best possible terms. It is expected that each queen committee will have a flc/at in the big procession to be held on Saturday, Ist April, and these displays alone should make that, event most spectacular. Later advice received is to the effect that Mrs. Bradley, of Upper Hutt, has been selected as the Women's Organisations' Queen. Mrs. Bradley is the well-known operatic singer, whose successes, both here and at Ballarat will be remembered. There will probably be seven queens in all. Returned Soldiers' Candidate. An enthusiastic meeting of members and friends of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held in the club rooms to consider arrangements for the forthcoming queen carnival in connection with the Centennial memorial fund. Miss Joan Cowie was chosen as the R.S.A. queen, and it is intended to. hold fancy dress dances at Petone and Lower Hutt, social gatherings and a copper trail, and other functions to ensure the candidate's' election as queen of the carnival. A strong committee was appointed with Mr. Kendrick as chairman, Mrs. Geo. Sband secretary, Mrs. J. M. Pointon assistant secretary, and .Mh C.. Whiteman treasurer. Returned soldiers are asked to | "spring to it" and give their active support to the movement. An enthusiastic meeting of the Retailers' Queen Committee was held on Tuesday morning, when it was decided to nominate Miss E. C. Darby as the committee'? queen candidate. It was decided to change the name of the committee to "The Hutt Valley Business and Professional Queen Committee."
